Psalm 56:12-13

Bible OpenBIBLE TRANSLATIONS DO MATTER!  For those who approach the subject with a scholarly interest, the Internet is a gold mine of information.  Begin with the publishers themselves.  Each publisher shares extensively with readers about its team of translators and the linguistic and theological guidelines that resulted in their own Holy Bible.Lord's Prayer Tower

HERE…we are concerned with the readers…how do the different translations of the Holy Bible impact you in your understanding and love of scripture?  How do they serve to bring you into close communion with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

ONE EXAMPLE…My Life Verse is Psalm 56:12-13.  Below, this passage is given in six different translations.  Read the passages out loud.  While the message is generally the same in all six, there is a great difference in the impact any one translation can have on a reader.

  • Beauty – there are many synonyms for the concept of love.  Which of these love words brings beauty to the passage?Lord's Prayer Hebrew
  • Lyricism – the Psalms are poetry and song;  the lines of a psalm can be a choppy collection of words or a lyrical passage that “sings itself.”
  • Clarity – a beautiful, lyrical verse of scripture misses the mark if the reader does not understand what is meant in the verse.
  • Accuracy – even with beauty, lyricism and clarity…a verse must accurately convey the information and meaning held in the original text.  Adding, deleting and changing words may be necessary to speak in the language of today’s culture.  But truth is timeless.  What the Holy Bible said to the first readers should be what it says to us today.
